As you probably have concluded we left AoC some time ago for obvious reasons. The associated website is offline. |

Salutations and well met!
After a hot summer and a (too short) week of vacationing i am back to my job, and im _still_ not able to spend any time for my online adventures. Sad world. But i am looking forward to the next year, where i anticipate some professional changes. As always, please feel free to email me if you want to stay in touch, and safe journeys!

On a day like today...
1827 First Black newspaper in US, Freedom's Journal, published in New York City by John B. Russwurm.
1831 29,000 textiles workers, mostly women, strike in Lawrence, MA.
1968 Charlie Company, led by Lt. William Calley, enters the My Lai village in the Quang Ngai Province of South Vietnam meeting no resistance. Calley then ordered the slaughter of the civilians. People were rounded up into ditches and machine-gunned. They lay five feet deep in the ditches; any survivors trying to escape were immediately shot. When Calley spotted a baby crawling away from a ditch, he grabbed her, threw her back into the ditch, and opened fire. Some of the dead were mutilated by having "C Company" carved into their chests; some were disemboweled. Over 500 civilians were killed. The US Army covered up the incident and General William Westmoreland sent a personal congratulatory note to Charlie Company; it would take over a year for soldiers and the media to inform the public of the events. At a courts martial, using a Nazi-like defense of "just following orders," only one soldier, William Calley, was found guilty of murder. Calley was "sentenced" to a comfortable apartment in Fort Benning, Georgia, where he was allowed to have pets, entertain guests, and cook his own meals. |
